FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
We get dozens of identical questions every day. Maybe you’ll find what you’re looking for right here.
If you still want to create the print files yourself, you can find the instructions » here « as a PDF showing how the print files should ideally look:
If you’d like to save yourself this work: We’ll handle all the print file preparation including upscaling, creating cutout paths, creating bleed marks, checking print quality, etc. for €24.95. For this, simply select “Create Cutout and Contour Cut” during your order.
With the “Premium Data Check” you can also review the result and request one round of changes (we’ll send you the finished, open print file. You can then make your own changes in Illustrator).
If you have any remaining questions, you can find » here « an open PDF with a completely finished print file, as it’s typically passed on to production.
All print files are checked by us. Minor errors, such as insufficient bleed, will be corrected by our team.
There’s no simple answer here: The closer you, your friends, or customers will be standing to the cutout, the higher the resolution should be to avoid a blurry appearance. However, it’s perfectly normal for a figure to end up at only 40-50 PPI after being scaled up to final size. This happens even with the best cameras.
If you’re preparing the files yourself, you should upscale the photo to its final size in Photoshop first (the “Bicubic Smoother” scaling algorithm has proven to work best) and set it to a maximum of 120 PPI. This prevents pixelation of the figure. Upscaling the photo to 300 PPI doesn’t make sense – it won’t improve the quality and will only slow down your computer and ours unnecessarily.
You can find tips on how to get a great photo in our detailed photo guide.
Unfortunately, we don’t have access to a photo database. We also can’t use photos from previous customers since we don’t own the image rights.
You can find free images that are completely safe to use (practically only) here: pixabay.com or pexels.com. Alternatively, you could try paid stock photo sites like Fotolia or iStock.
If you want to search for images on Google, you should use these search settings to ensure the figure’s resolution will be sufficient.
Important: Almost every image on the internet is protected by copyright. Using an image without the creator’s permission can lead to legal action. If in doubt, you must always obtain usage rights from the copyright holder or current owner.
We’re happy to create a cardboard cutout from any photo you send us. However, if legal action results from the figure we produce for you, we cannot cover the legal costs. We assume that you have taken care of the image rights.
The best way to check is to zoom into the image until the section is displayed roughly life-size on your screen. This is easiest to judge on a large monitor.
Rule of thumb: If it looks good on screen at life-size, it will most likely look good when printed at life-size too.
What we can do is lighten shadows on the face, tone down a rosy nose, or remove toothpaste stains from pants. If in doubt, just give us a quick call.
We can’t just “Photoshop” arms or legs back in – or rather, we don’t do that. You’d need to consult a professional retoucher for that.
What we can do is place a custom-designed base in front of the legs. Our graphic team can design a base for you, but you’ll need to get in touch so we can calculate the costs.
Our designers generally don’t reinvent the wheel – we base our designs on existing styles, such as wedding cards or postcards, to create your custom base.
To help our designers, please consider the style, colors, etc., you’d like beforehand. Ideally, include a reference link (e.g., from Freepik) or your company’s corporate design guidelines if applicable.
To ensure your life-size cardboard cutout looks great, we need a high-resolution photo. Accepted file formats for upload are jpg, jpeg, pdf, tiff, tif, png, bmp, and psd, with a maximum file size of 500 MB. Ideally, the person, pet, or building should be fully visible in the photo—if possible. Without legs, your cutout might look like it’s stuck in the ground.
Once your order is placed, our graphic designers will check if your image has sufficient resolution, lighting, and sharpness. If we determine that your photo isn’t suitable for digital printing, we’ll contact you immediately—at no cost to you. Charges only apply once your custom cardboard cutout goes into production.
